Dance Party on Serendipity

Today S had to leave to go on a trip to Pittsburgh. Generally this means some kind of "girls night" for K and I. (Enter Moes for dinner or some other such event.) So K asked, "mommy, what are we going to do tonight?" I'm sure expecting that we'd go out for dinner... I'm not sure why I said it, but I said, "how about we have a dance party?" What that meant? No idea. How does one do that? No idea. Given I didn't know, I was pretty sure she didn't either.

I pick her up from school and as soon as I get there I am asked "mommy, are we going to have a dance party tonight?!" Hm. Okay. So she remembered. *Actually, no shock there... You can't put anything past this kid!!!*

After a stop at Target (and Starbucks so she could get "a cup of coffee" AKA hot chocolate), we arrive home and eat some dinner. She can't WAIT to have her dance party... And so it begins.

We have a playlist that she and I sometimes sing and dance to. It consists of true party songs... Okay. For us. Judge if you must but we can rock-OUT to these songs... (Last one is a come down from crazy-ville song.)

Our playlist *tada*:
1. Tonight Tonight (Hot Chelle Rae)
2. California Gurls (Katy Perry) ~ Note: We change the words to "Carolina Gurls" oh whoa whoa
3. Party in the U.S.A. (Miley Cyrus)
4. Mickey (Toni Basil)
5. Walk Like an Egyptian (The Bangles)
6. Bust A Move (Glee Cast Version)
7. Lean on Me (Glee Cast Version)

27 minutes of singing and dancing. And that's what we did tonight. We took turns dancing... Fortunately K doesn't know how to record holding still so there's no video of me, but there is of her. She's combining the best of her tap, ballet and straight up mommy shakin' bootie moves. I say... "Shake whatcha momma gave you girl!!!" She says... "OH YEAH!!!"

Makin memories folks... Makin memories. =)

Tonight, Tonight

PS: Tonight as I put her to bed she asked when she could have her next dance party. =) SUCCESS!! <3

Family Traditions

Thanksgiving weekend in the Aleksza house is full of family traditions. Some started prior to Katherine being born... Others started after... and some started (hopefully) this year. =)

We kicked off the holiday weekend on Wednesday evening with a pajama pizza party. With all of the cooking that still needed to be done in preparation for Thursday, we decided pizza would be a good way to avoid a dinner mess in addition to the turkey day cooking. Seems perfectly reasonable!! And I will have you know that the day before Thanksgiving is one of the most popular days of the year for pizza. Don't believe me?

Read on: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/pizza-sales-boom-on-eve-of-thanksgiving-2011-11-23

Actually I read a stat like this a few years ago and that's where I got the idea to order pizza. I figured if it was good enough for so many other people, it could be good enough for me. And seriously. I do so heart me some pizza.

After dinner S started making some of the sides and such and K and I got to work on our family race day shirts. Enter: New Family Tradition. I hope. Maybe? The shirts were some of K and my finest artistic work. Can you REALLY go wrong with hand turkeys all over a shirt?! We say... No way. Unfortunately others at the race didn't have quite the festive approach that we did. *More later on this.*

K was so excited that she woke up and put her clothes on in the middle of the night.

Thursday morning we woke up bright and early and headed to the race. Our first Turkey Trot!! K and I were SUPER excited. S was... well... Happy we were excited! When we arrived I was a little disappointed to see that there were so few people bedazzled in festive gear. Few as in, pretty much us. I was hoping S wouldn't notice but alas, he did. Fortunately he was a good sport about the whole thing!

The first race up was the 1mi run. S, K and I did it together. I pushed K in the jogger while S and I ran. S did an AWESOME job completing his first one mile race in 12minutes. A PR for sure!! =)

My race was next... I completed the 8k in 54:20. A PR for me as well! I'll admit to being unprepared for a few of those hills but I took them on! I had turkey to eat! While I ran K and S decorated the finish line for me. So cute!!

K's race was the last one of the morning and she was ready to go.

After waiting 90 minutes for my race and S's race to finish it was *finally* her turn. She knew exactly where the finish line was. I asked her whether she wanted me to run with her and she told me "no, I want to do it all by myself!!!" Okey dokey. It appeared as if there were about 100 or so kids that ran in the race. K was in the middle of the pack and when she saw me coming up behind her (just trying to keep up so I could take some pictures) she dead stopped, turned around and said "I told you I was running by myself!!" Whoa. Turned around and started running again. hehehe

After her race she told S and I that she was amazing and she won the race. =) She did after all receive a gold medal for her amazing finish. Her summary of the race: You run. You stop. You get a medal. Post race. With medal. And "game face"! =)

Post race we went to Whole Foods (all three races finished in their parking lot) and got a little coffee/water and a breakfast snack. My sister N came over and we spent the rest of the day in pajamas, on the sofa, perusing the black friday ads along with watching movies and the Macy's parade. The parade was a big hit. Particularly the Sesame Street float. K and I both got up to dance to the music. Good song. =) Good times.

As many of you know black Friday shopping is a tradition for S and I. We've spent the last 10 years waking up (very) early on Friday morning to head out for the deals of the year. There are a lot of people that say that the deals are the same other times during the year - but I can tell you, for two people that "research" through the year, that's not the case. We start planning in September/October and wait for the ads to be available online so we could start planning times, routes, etc. Yes. We're those people!! A few things we won't do: Stand outside all night waiting for something. Get riled up if we don't happen to get something. Treat the night as something other than an adventure. For us it's been more about the find and the fun that goes along with it.

This year was the first year that S and I didn't go out together. We typically have someone who's at our house that can stay with K while they sleep and we shop. This year we didn't and we thought it slightly irresponsible to take K out in the middle of the night. So she went to bed at 7:30 and I headed out at 9:30 to some of the stores that started their sales at 10. I had to stand outside of Target for 90+ minutes waiting for the midnight opening but I had good company around me. The couple behind me kept me entertained for the majority of the time. They also helped me when I was fortunate enough to land one of the TVs that were on-sale. A 46" TV for a 59" girl... Trouble!!! Thanks to the help of my friends we got it outside and in my car. I came home after that and got a couple of hours of sleep before the family headed out at 5:30am. Yes, we did end up waking K up to go out for a bit. She was pretty excited to "go shopping in the dark" and see the sun come up. I didn't feel like a total jerk mom since she did get about 10 hours of sleep before she got up. She wanted to go shopping at Target, the ABCD store (AKA Kohls) and Walmart. She'd seen their ads. Girl is already a black Friday go-getter! =) The rest of the day on Friday we spent lounging about again. We needed our rest in preparation for Saturday's events.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is our traditional day to go Christmas tree shopping. Some people go to local tree stands to get their trees. We go to the mountain to get our tree. We started this tradition before K was born. The first year it was a disaster. I got a speeding ticket along the way (jerk of a cop who didn't even speak to me!!! - and I maintain it was all the red Aurora's fault!!!) We called the farm that we were going to and told them that we were on our way but were running late (due to aforementioned issue). They agreed to wait for us to arrive. We did. And it was dark. We picked our tree by the headlights of my car. Oh yeah. Awesome. I walked up to the first tree I saw and said THIS ONE. I was done. Good memory.

The following year when we got a post card from the same farm we decided to go back, and hopefully avoid the horrid red aurora in the process. An annual trip to the Circle C Farm in Boone, NC is now a family tradition. The farm is wonderful, the people are very nice and the trees are beautiful. We get two trees there for the price of what one tree would be in Raleigh and a family adventure in the process! =) This year when we told K that we were going to go to the mountains to get a Christmas tree she asked, "are we going to take a hay ride & get popcorn too?!" She remembered that from last year... Yes, yes, dear we will. She was VERY excited when she finally got her popcorn.

As for our tree shopping this year... We left Raleigh with a target of a 7-8ft tree. I found my perfect tree as soon as we got out of the car and onto the hay ride.

Okay. So it was probably 20' tall. But seriously - it was perfect. I heard "aaaahhhhhhhhhh"s in my head as I looked at it, mixed with the words of my very own Ebineezer saying "NO WAY!!!" BAH HUMBUG!!! Fine. But we have a two story foyer. I can make it fit!!! The look I got said he'd make it fit somewhere else too... mmm. No thanks. Then we found Ks version of the perfect tree. Yeah... cute, but not so much. We finally convinced her to let the "charlie brown tree" remain on the mountain so it could grow big like the mommy & daddy trees.

We continued our search... for more than 2 hours looking for family agreed upon perfect trees. They were all so big!! It was the same area of the farm we went to last year. Evidently trees grow a lot in a year's time. Most of the trees were 9' or taller. As we looked for 7-8' trees it felt like we were looking for "wee trees".

At last, we found the perfect trees. After tagging and waving over a man to cut them, twice, and then changing our minds. Yeah. We were those people. Similar to last year, our perfect trees were right beside each other. I call them "sister trees". We knew the one looked kinda big, but it seemed the right size, or so said the pole we were using to measure it with. As they drug the trees down the mountain and they had to go into the gas powered tree wrapper thingy, we knew we were in trouble...

When we brought it into the house and it rubbed across our 10' ceilings... Mm. Yup. That confirmed it. So we gave it a lil hair cut and all is well. As I sit and look at the tree I'm giggling a little wondering how in the world we are going to light the thing. I'm thinking of just running strands of lights straight up the tree. Does it help that it's beautiful??

Sunday was a day to regain control of the house, get the trees inside and do other assorted chores. Like planting 90 tulip bulbs, get the outside lights working and hang some pictures. We hadn't hung the pictures back up since the house was sided/painted and I had the brilliant idea to get them all back on the walls. We did. Only one minor, okay medium, mess in the process when we also attempted to hang the mirror in our bedroom. Yes, that would be drywall patch. :0/

Now we're back to work and school -> looking forward to the next long weekend in December. =) We hope all of you had a wonderful holiday weekend filled with fun & memory making!!

MOMMMMYYYY, LOOOOOK!!!

I heard this a lot today. And it was shrieked, yes shrieked, loudly and excitedly. It was AWESOME!!

Today we went to the Raleigh Christmas Parade. I know what you're thinking - it's not even Thanksgiving yet. I get it. But what am I supposed to do? It is the largest christmas parade between DC and Atlanta. Poor Richmond... Apparently their gig is weak?!

This was the first year we went to the parade. Usually we think about Christmas parades AFTER they've all happened. Not this year folks. Nosiree. We can thank our friends for ensuring we didn't miss it this year! =) Our friends daughter was performing in the parade this year, so that was added incentive!

Fortunately they're parade professionals. They were there bright and early and staked out curbside seats for both families. Our contribution to the morning was KK donuts, coffee & hot chocolate. What's better than watching a parade, eating donuts, sipping on coffee and hearing your daughter squeal with excitement, while laughing with friends? Not much, I tell ya. Not much.

We learned today that there are A LOT (read: A LOT) of dance studios and beauty pageants in Raleigh. There were a lot of bands too. Most are small. Except the group that is going to the Rose Bowl. Broughton High School will be attending the Tournament of Roses parade in Pacedena CA on 1/2/2012. While my knowledge of the school is limited to knowing that they graduated one of my friends daughters who went on to secure a full soccer scholarship (Go girl!!!), I know that they're a pretty kick butt public school in Raleigh. It's one of the Magnet schools... If K were ready for high school I think I'd be looking at the school. =) Anyway, impressively the band opened the parade and then closed it. We don't know what logistics were involved in pulling that off but it was pretty cool. And they still looked great!!! Good luck guys!!

There were two giant floats: Animal from the Muppets and a Nutcracker. Watching the balloon people today gave us a whole new appreciation for what the crews do in NY and Philadelphia. One of the highlights was the nutcracker flying over our head. Cool!!!

K couldn't have been more excited at the on-going entertainment of the parade. Giant shopping carts, cars shaped like a roller skate, dancers, flag teams, classic cars, motorcycles, dogs, horses, miniature ponies, donkeys, sheep, a llama posing as a camel (had to see it to believe it), and of course Santa... It was an event filled 2.5 hours. I can't count the number of times we heard MOMMY GUESS WHATS COMING?!

It made me smile each time. Her enthusiasm for the little things is rejuvenating. Don't just take time to smell the flowers... Take time to wave enthusiastically at the horses, dancers and llama camels. You'll smile as big as the lil one beside you.

Vacation... Yes, please.

I know I had a vacation about a month ago, but it seems like it was forever ago. I might point to my UD for all of the day-dreaming about vacation lately. About a week ago he asked if I would write a blog about family vacations growing up. It's made me long for a vacation... while I recall memories of vacations past.

Vacations Past...
As a kid, for more years than I can probably recollect, my Godparents (also my aunt and uncle) took me on vacation with their family. My (immediate) family has never been on vacation together. As an adult I now understand how difficult things were for us financially, thus making that the case. UD & AC, however, came through many a time for me. I was able to experience a lot of things that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

Places I remember vacationing (most) were Williamsburg and the Poconos. There may have been some other places but those are the two that stick out in my mind the most. AC and UD had a timeshare so the places we stayed in were like little condos. They slept something like 482 people (or 12) and had kitchens, multiple bathrooms and most of the time a jacuzzi. (SCOOORE!!!) Even as a kid I knew jacuzzis were awe-some!!

One of my favorite memories was one of our trips (city/location unknown) where we had a dishwasher for what seemed to be the first time. Dishwashers growing up were kids standing on chairs after dinner, with soapy hands, arms and clothes. Not machines where you could put the dirty dishes and they magically became clean. WHOA!!! The concept of don't put ice in the HOT glasses as they come out of the dishwasher was clearly lost on my cousins and I. We, quite capably, destroyed at least 8 glasses. I think after the 3rd call to housekeeping for more glasses they finally asked what the heck we were doing. It was THEN that we got our lesson. Oopsie.

Same place, same trip - UD got so excited at the thought of building a fire (IN THE SUMMER) that he turned down the AC in the unit to (what felt like) 23.Then we went grocery shopping... When we came back we were all shivering. What's that you say? What did we do? Why the only logical thing: We built a fire! In July. In the woods. =) That night, or one of the other nights we were there, we also had some deer visit us. My cousin went outside to the car and came in screaming that he'd seen a deer. I didn't check his underpants but I'm pretty sure there was trouble there given the look on his face. =)

During those trips I got to spend time with my cousins, who today are more like siblings than cousins to me. Whether it was playing 500 rummy, pinnacle (for which I constantly had to have a cheat sheet) or some other card game that my aunt and uncle patiently taught me... We had a lot of fun. Friday nights were always memorable as they were "clean out the fridge" nights... Whatever ice cream, goodies, etc. were left were fair game. No pea eating required. (JACKPOT)

Of course as I was on these trips I thought... Williamsburg? Mmm... I don't think I'll ever bring my kids here. I mean, who wants to go see people dress up in old costumes pretending to be soldiers?

Vacations Present...
We own a time share. One that we purchased on eBay... but we own one. Through our time share network we have booked vacations in Williamsburg for the last two years, in April. The two trips we've taken there have been some of our very best family time. K is now experiencing what I did in my youth, with a few differences.

We too go grocery shopping on the day of arrival however we bring at least 2 rubber maids full of non-perishables so we don't have to buy them while we're there. (paper towels, trash bags, dish soap, etc) We also know not to take hot glasses and put ice cubes in them. =)

We go to Williamsburg to walk around each time we're there. Our favorite lunch place is the Cheese Shop. S gets a plate of cheeses paired with a glass of wine, I get a sandwich (that K ends up eating half of) and she asks for a grilled cheese (which daddy and mommy end up eating because she's eating my food). We eat outside and people watch - something we all enjoy. After we're done eating we wander down the road and lay on the grass and play. Each time we visit W-burg we do this twice - at least. It's always a highlight for us.

This year we also visited Busch Gardens. The Sesame Street area was a HUGE hit. For all of us. There's nothing like seeing K's face so excited to see one of her favorite "friends".

Just like when I was growing up, the last night is always "clean out the fridge" night. Ice cream, goodies, or whatever other treats remain in the fridge are fair game.

As I sit and think about both vacations of my youth and now, with my little family, I smile at all of the fun we've had and memories we've made... and I look forward to making more in the future. Here's to next time we visit the Burg. =)

Green beans are her peas

Another blog. Hm. Fancy that.

Tonight I was repaid for the trouble I caused in my youth with eating vegetables. I knew it would happen. I just didn't realize it would happen so soon!!

You see, for those that don't know, vegetables... Any sort, and especially those of a green variety, were (read: are) my nemesis. I dislike them. Even the lettuce in my salad is closer to white than green. Nutritional value? I'll take a multi-vitamin, thanks.

Growing up my mom never made me eat things I didn't like. This was awesome for me. I still remain very grateful for that. Of course it meant that if I didn't like it I didn't eat... but I could live with that for not having to eat my veggies. I don't remember nights I was hungry because I didn't eat my vegetables but I DOOOOO remember nights that I HAD to eat my veggies. Grandmom and my mother were NOT on the same page here. Oh nooooo... Nor was AC. And given I spent many a weekend, summer, etc. at my grandmother's house when I was growing up... The veggie thing, well: It traumatized me.

As a kid I had a PERFECT way of getting rid of the veggies and still have dessert. It was devious. But I tell ya, it worked. Until a certain cousin, who shall remain nameless but I'm sure you can figure out who!!, decided to try to mimic my secret evil plot and ruined it due to poor execution.

At Grandmom's we used to eat in the dining room. Generally at the bar. (What good irish catholic family doesn't have a bar in their house?!) The adults, however, would eat in the kitchen. Seems a little backwards but this is how we did things. Well, with the grown ups in another room, and napkins a plenty for the messy children, I would put my peas, lima beans, asparagus, whatever green ailment was on my plate, into a napkin and promptly march to the bathroom. They would meet their demise in the toilet. FLUSSHHHED!!! Bu-bye peas. Not gonna get this kid.

That worked for a while. A long while. Until aforementioned cousin decided to try the same thing with whatever veggie he (oops gave part of it away) decided he didn't like. EXCEPT he didn't flush them down the toilet. Nooooo, he put them in the trashcan in the hallway. Seriously. Dude. SMH. We were caught. He ratted me out in an instant. The kid cracked like a twig. From then on napkins were no longer allowed at the table. Nor were trips to the bathroom without inspection of hands. Again I say: Seriously, dude?! The hallway trashcan?! WTC.

At that point since I couldn't flush the veggies I was forced to eat them. It was horrid. Actually forced may be an overstatement. I was bribed. But then, fibbed to. Straight up mislead. We would be told no dessert unless we finished our veggies. Mkay. Most nights - don't care. Keep your veggies and your tasty cake. Until the bribery of a jello pudding pop? What did you say? It's the last one? The girl that finishes her veggies first gets the coveted pop? The stare down began. This cousin could have cared less about the pudding pop. But she remained in it, I think because we were both just bullheaded. So, who would finish our peas first. Me. I assure you. It WILL be me. Peas, fortunately, are a vegetable that can be swallowed whole. So I did. The whole serving. whole. With gulps of iced tea. And do you know what I find out?! There were TWO pudding pops left. FARCE!!!!! FIBBERS!!! This was likely 25 years ago and I remember it like yesterday. Thanks for the trauma AC & Grandmom. Thanks for the trauma.

So now we get to today. And guess what I do to K. I'm one of THOSE moms who now says to my child what my grandmother used to say to me... Eat your veggies or you don't get dessert. Tonight it was a dark chocolate covered pumpkin peep. K WANNNNTED that peep. She had FIVE (cut) green beans on her plate. Five. not 45. FIVE. I turn my head to finish putting dinner on the table and what does girlfriend do? Puts each of the green beans back in the bowl on the table. When I turn around and ask her where they are, she looks away (won't make eye contact) and says "I don't know."

Who was the victor tonight? Me. She ate all five green beans and had her pumpkin peep. =)

My grandmother, grandfather and mother are all hysterically laughing in heaven, I have no doubt. Yes, yes. You win. A child just like me.

And the challenge is on...

Today a blog launched for the company I work for, that I will be a primary contributor for. I received some "incentive mail" from a loving family member highlighting the fact that I don't update the family blog how can I keep up with another one. My response: The other one pays part of the mortgage! =)

So I'll take the challenge... At least for now. I can't promise I'll do the fancy photo albums, etc etc that I work endlessly on =P but I will give you some content. I think. If I can remember it.

There have been so many times lately that I've thought ooohhhh I so need to tell everyone about K saying that. And then 2 hours later I think, what the heck was it she said?! Aw, crap. I should have written it down. But then I never do. *sigh* Maybe I need a vitamin or something? Or maybe I just need more sleep. Yeahhhh, more sleep, THATs it!!

Lately K has been telling LOTS of stories about her Grandma and Helen (AKA Aunt Helen). She talks to both on the phone and after which has stories beyond stories. She's quite creative. Apparently Grandma loooooves flying in airplanes. Blue ones. (Grandma, did you know this?!) She also said that Grandma loooooves milkshakes. (True) *Aunt* Helen evidently was at work this week and had trick or treat candy for us. Peanut butter cups and gummies. Aunt Helen may have had some of that candy... I'm just not sure she's holding it for us! =P The stories are amusing and each time we call Grandma or Aunt Helen for her to share these stories she goes silent on us. The girl straight up stops talking. As I write this I'm getting a brilliant thought... Maybe that's what I do when I want a little quiet time?! We call Grandma or Aunt Helen... Virtual sitter?! mmm. Yeah, you're probably right - it should at least be via webcam! What? That's not what you were thinking? Oh.

I also think somehow we're raising a Valley Girl. Honestly, I don't know where she gets the "like" thing from. "it's like not good." "Like, I don't know." There are things I take full credit (read: blame) for, but this isn't one of them. Daddy teaches her HOOYAH and I teach her EEEEK. Daddy teaches her "whoa sailor!!" and I teach her "holy smokes". I get it. She'll repeat me... but LIKE?! Sweet lawd. And is it even possible to have a southern valley girl?! And for the record, no I don't think this has anything to do with my cheerleading. I mean, like totally, I didn't talk like that! "Yikes" << Totally me!!

Like, take a look at some pics y'all. ;) HOOYAH

Pumpkin Carving with the K family! =)

Our masterpiece. Yeah, we went classic. K was totalllllly not into scooping out the inside. She shrieked and moved away. :-/
